Wailing Ships is a new trio from MN/WI with deep roots in both the experimental & improvised music community, and the deep and broad jazz scene of the Twin Cities. Despite their relative newness on the scene, Wailing Ships has already demonstrated a distinct identity and group sound. It is an emotionally-charged post-jazz, drawing heavily from the compositional frameworks of Tim Berne, Henry Threadgill, and Mary Halvorson, where free improvisations link extended written passages in highly narrative pieces that explore a multitude of approaches towards time, timbre, groove, harmony, and form.
This will be Surrounded By Reality’s first show at Dobhan restaurant, in the heart of the thriving Atwood neighborhood. SBR is thrilled at the opportunity to produce events in this wonderful space, which features a high ceiling, great sight lines, lively acoustics, and of course a stellar menu and bar selection. This will also be SBR’s first free-admission event, and we are grateful to Dobhan for their support.
Davu Seru is one of the most accomplished young percussionists in the midwest. He plays regularly with free improv and jazz icons Milo Fine, Paul Metzger, Anthony Cox, and George Cartwright, and has performed with Anthony Braxton, Evan Parker, Taylor Ho-Bynum, Fred Lonberg-Holm, and many others. http://davuseru.com/
Joshua Granowski is a busy bassist in the Twin Cities in the jazz, folk, and avant garde communities. He has a working trio with George Cartwright of the seminal downtown jazz/punk band Curlew. He also plays in the radical bass/drum duo Large Marge.
Luke Polipnick (formerly of Minneapolis, now residing in Madison) is one third of Surrounded By Reality. He maintains several working bands (Glacier, Volcano Insurance, Wailing Ships) and is an in-demand sideman on the Madison/Milwaukee jazz scenes. He has appeared in concert with Fareed Haque, Anthony Cox, Mike Lewis, Tatsuya Nakatani, and others. Polipnick is also an accomplished electro-acoustic composer, and has appeared at Spark, Sonic Circuits, and Soundfield festivals as a composer, guitarist and sound artist.
